Vieste is a lively sea town overlooking the Adriatic sea, known for its well-extended sand beaches kissed by a beautiful sea. Vieste’s symbol is Pizzomunno, a 25-meter limestone monolith standing above the beach about which many stories and legends have been told. Even Vieste’s marine caves are renowned for their beauty and their picturesque plays of light you can spot inside, a place we definitely recommend you to visit. Among the best known ones are Grotta Campana (Campana Cave), famous for its shape, Grotta Smeralda (Smeralda Cave) where you can observe wonderful color effects and the famous Grotta delle Sirene (Sirens Cave), where according to legend these fascinating mythological beings lived.
In Vieste’s town center is the enchanting bay of Marina Piccola, once the town’s harbor which overlooks the medieval historic center with its suggestive while houses and palm trees. Vieste’s historic center boasts a very ancient history which is reflected in the urban architecture and rich cultural heritage. Worth a visit are the Romanic-Apulian-style Cathedral with a late-Baroque bell tower and Il Castello Svevo, erected by Federico II in 1242. It is possible to visit the castle twice a week through a free guided visit organized by the municipality of Vieste. The visit can be booked directly at Torrente Hotel’s reception
To enjoy a break from sun and beaches, we recommend a visit to the Umbrian Forest, a large 1000-hectare forest located in the Headland’s inner part. This is Italy’s largest forest of beeches and broadleaves inhabited by towering trees. Beeches are real natural cathedral which can reach a 40-meter height and a one-meter diameter. In this natural heaven there are plenty of rare vegetable species like wild orchids, the wild cat and the mysterious eagle owl. If you love nature and greenery, do not miss out a tour across this beautiful forest
